He was born Paul Andrew “Andy” Richter on October 28, 1966, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He spent most of his early years in Yorkville, IL. After high school, he enrolled at the University of Illinois. He capped off his education studying film and video production at Columbia College. To pursue a career as a performer he moved to Chicago where he entered the world of improvisational comedy and worked with a number of improv comedy groups. His first success came playing Mike Brady in the off-Broadway stage production The Real Live Brady Bunch (1992).
Conan O’Brien: While working on The Real Brady Bunch, two of Andy’s friends from a comedy troupe were hired as cast members on SNL. Through these friends Andy met SNL writer Robert Smigel. In 1993 Robert hired Andy as a writer on the soon-to-be-launched Late Night with Conan O’Brien. Just two weeks before the show premiered Andy was promoted to be Conan’s on-screen sidekick.
After he developed a loyal fan base of his own, Richter left the show and concentrated on other projects like Andy Richter Controls the Universe (Fox, 2002-03) and Andy Barker: P.I. (NBC, 2007). Making guest appearances in numerous other shows, he was also present on the big screen, starring in Dr. T and the Women, Dr. Dolittle 2, Scary Movie 2, My Boss’s Daughter, Seeing Other People, Elf, Big Trouble, Aliens in the Attic, as well as in three of the Madagascar installments.
Personal Life: Andy was married to actress Sarah Thyre, with whom he has two children, from 1994 to 2019.
