Archbishop Justin Welby Biography

Justin Portal Welby is the 105th Archbishop of Canterbury and the most senior bishop in the Church of England. Welby was born on 6 January 1956 in London, England. The Benedictine and Franciscan orders in the Anglican churches and also the Catholic social teaching has influenced Welby spiritual formation.

In 2012 Welby succeeded Rowan Williams whose tenure was noticeable by a growing rift within the Anglican Communion between theological liberals and traditionalists within the United Kingdom and abroad.

His mother is Jane Gillian Portal and father is Gavin Bramhall James Welby. His father died in 1977. Both his parents were alcoholics. They divorced when he was at the age of three in 1959. A paternity testing conducted in 2016 proved the biological father of Welby is Sir Anthony Montague Browne. Sir Anthony Montague Browne had a relationship with Welby mother soon after her marriage in 1955.

Justin Welby Business Career

Before Welby became the Archbishop of Canterbury, he worked at French oil company Elf Aquitaine based in Paris for five years and Enterprise Oil plc in London. He worked in the oil industry for 11 years. He was a congregation member at the evangelical Anglican church of Holy Trinity in Brompton, London while working at Enterprise Oil plc in London.

Welby left the oil industry as he felt that God wanted him to be ordained. John Hughes, the Bishop of Kensington at first rejected his ordination. He was later supported by the Vicar of Holy Trinity Brompton, Sandy Millar and also was accepted for ordination.

Welby joined Cranmer Hall and St John’s College, Durham where he studied theology and trained for the priesthood in 1989. Justin was awarded a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree and a Diploma in Ministry in 1992.

Welby was ordained as a deacon by Simon Barrington-Ward who was the Bishop of Coventry at Petertide on 28 June 1992 and a priest on 27 June 1993 at Coventry Cathedral. Between 1992 and 1995, Welby was the curate at Chilvers Coton and St Mary the Virgin, Astley (Nuneaton). He became rector of St James’ Church, Southam. He was the vicar of St Michael and All Angels, Ufton, Diocese of Coventry, between 1995 and 2002.

Justin was appointed a canon residentiary of Coventry Cathedral in 2002. He was also appointed as the co-director for international ministry at the International Centre for Reconciliation in the same year. Three years later, Welby was appointed sub-dean and Canon for Reconciliation Ministry. In December 2007, he was appointed Dean of Liverpool.

He left Liverpool Cathedral on 2 October 2011 and was became the Bishop of Durham at York Minster on 29 September 2011. On 28 October 2011, Welby was consecrated as a bishop at York Minster. He was crowned as Bishop of Durham in Durham Cathedral on 26 November 2011.

On 6 November 2012, Welby emerged as a candidate to be the next Archbishop of Canterbury. Justin appointment was announced on 9 November 2012 as the next Archbishop of Canterbury. On 4 February 2013, he was confirmed as the Archbishop of Canterbury. On February 5, 2013, he was appointed to the Privy Council of the United Kingdom. He took an oath of office on March 13, 2013. Welby was enthroned as the Archbishop of Canterbury on 21 March 2013, at Canterbury Cathedral.

On May 19 2018, Welby officiated the biggest wedding of the year as Meghan Markle and Prince Harry exchanged their vows.

Welby started his education at St Peter’s School, Seaford. He later joined Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. His great-uncle, Lord Butler of Saffron Walden, was the master at Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1978, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in history and law. Thereafter, he was promoted to a Master of Arts.
